Summary

Berserk volume 16 features story and art by Kentaro Miura。 Warrior supreme Guts has been marked for sacrifice to the armies of the damned, and now he has the blood of a village of possessed children on his hands, a horde of elf-demons straight out of a fairy-tale fever dream。 But now Guts must deal with the Queen of the Elves herself, and though she may be cute as a button, she has hideous power and lethal intent, and in her wake, no one lives happily ever after!

like a 3。75 but for some reason can’t bring myself to tag it as a four, nice wrap up on jill, felt more solid than the last two volumes, more interested to keep going than those two volumes, think the pace is starting to pick up again

Some of the best dialogue post-Golden Age is in here。 Weaker arc overall, but solid ending。

I legit cried!!This was soo sad at the end!!!

This was another cool one, its pretty much the battle between that elf-human and Guts and its bloody and we get some flashback between her and Jill and their deep friendship, but Guts then slicing and dicing her and like a fairytale she keeps escaping and tells about the past and escapes into the night and then it features the battle between the Holy see knights and Guts and they want him and the battle is something but he is too tired and gets captured and tortured。 The new story arc begins!

Thrilling adventure continues !

This initially seemed to be a weaker arc than those previous, but the ending was actually pretty damn good!

Back on track! Amazing story, action, gore。 Very interested to see where this new arc goes into next!

The forest elves arc seemed a lost cause to me, but the ending was magnificent。

Guts has gotten himself in a messed up situation。 I am glad the fairy arc is over。 Even with that, this volume is just ok。

SUPER FAST REVIEW:Pretty solid volume for sure!First of all the story here is fucking amazing as always! The art is also absolutely great! Also gotta say, is anything this full of gory action and creepy horror stuff while not being 100% horror? I mean seriously, this series is FULL of things that will excite fans of horror and/or fantasy action scenes。My only problem with this volume is that I was confused by a few bits。 Don’t get me wrong, I got MOST of the story (like, at least 95% of it), jus SUPER FAST REVIEW:Pretty solid volume for sure!First of all the story here is fucking amazing as always! I’m glad I picked this series back up。 Puck isn’t nearly as annoying as I remembered him being。 He’s almost, dare I say it, endearing in this one。 He’s a good foil for the über machismo of Guts。

I lack the words to properly explain how fucking amazing the Lost Children story arc was。 I even tore up a bit by the end。 Surprising absolutely no one, the art is still above amazing。5/5 without any hesitation

The art style was truly mind-blowing on this volume, and the dialogues gets better compared to the previous volumes 。

This is my review of Berserk's Conviction arc, contained in volumes 15 through 21 of the manga。I didn't like this arc as much, but that doesn't mean its without merit。 Conviction comes after the Eclipse and chronologically after the introductory Black Swordsman arc。 The arc starts with Guts trying to survive the demons that prevent him from sleeping, and the trail of misfortune that follows him as he wanders aimlessly from place to place。 This seemed like a logical place to continue the story, a This is my review of Berserk's Conviction arc, contained in volumes 15 through 21 of the manga。I didn't like this arc as much, but that doesn't mean its without merit。 Conviction comes after the Eclipse and chronologically after the introductory Black Swordsman arc。 The arc starts with Guts trying to survive the demons that prevent him from sleeping, and the trail of misfortune that follows him as he wanders aimlessly from place to place。 This seemed like a logical place to continue the story, and the premise alone expresses the weight of everything that's happened paired with the hollowness that Guts feels。 The arc to me is essentially cut into three parts: the false elves, revisiting Godo, and finding Casca。 The beginning was interesting but didn't lead much into the other parts, Guts finding Godo and achieving his focus was the best part of the arc, and Guts' quest to find Casca is complicated by a maniacal holy crusade。 The first part revolves around Puck and Guts wandering into a village that restricts a young lady named Jill from going out to pursue her own life。 I was compelled to read the false-elves story purely because it uses a young, vulnerable character as its focal point。 Jill's story matches Guts' search for purpose and it was easy to empathize with and get involved with her as a focal character of the story。 However the dark logic of Berserk's universe rears its head again through Rosine, who does find it in her heart to escape the village。 She's a childhood friend of Jill who became an elf-like apostle through her sacrifice。 Through the really intriguing story of Peekaf we learn how those who look for purpose in the false elves are tragically forgotten, and this becomes an emotional point of contention for Jill。 Unfortunately while this story plays out, Guts doesn't grow very much but Rosine becomes his most tragic prey yet。 Much like the Count in the Black Swordsman arc, I found Guts' and Rosine's battle weighted by their tragic pasts, so I still felt impacted by their gory battle even if Guts just roars his way through combat。 The result felt tediously similar to most battles so far, but I'll be damned if it wasn't drawn with Miura's immaculate sense of detail and care。 After reuniting with Godo, Guts is reinvigorated to find Casca, only to become involved with the Holy Iron Chain Knights that have pursued him。 They're led by Lady Farnese and their actions are dictated by the terrifying Father Mozgus。 The most compelling part of their story was the demons pursuing and battling Guts test Lady Farnese's faith。 However this part of the story lacked something that a lot of the other arcs possess, which is the humanity that drives both the protagonists and antagonists of the story。 Mozgus doesn't really have much of an arc other than to express the terror and torture the church in Berserk is capable of。 Lady Farnese's faith is further tested by her comrades in arms and the very nature of torturing heretics, but there's not a lot of payoff other than her desertion and further pursuit of Guts。 Miura delivers the action to the reader very heavily throughout the Holy Iron Chain Knights story, which ends in Griffith/Femto re-entering the world。 However I feel that this part of the story only partially delivered the emotional and philosophical punch that the other arcs have。 Guts' motivation to save Casca keeps the story going, Puck joins Isidro as a fellow comic relief character (who I hope receives character development) and a codependent prostitute named Nina unlearns her cowardly ways when the tower is flooded with demons。 However I felt that a lot of the antagonists like Mozgus and the Great Goat were neutered of compelling features and just ended up as numbers in Guts' body count。 The world building was a lot slimmer in this one too, as I wanted reasons for why the mob at the end fearfully clung to their faith。 They didn't have much of a reason to want Casca dead other than their faith, which felt like a missed opportunity to tell a more interesting story in the wake of Miura's new demon-haunted world。 The arc leaves many questions to be solved by the next one, and I'm excited to see where the story goes from here。 I'm particularly excited to see how the demon dog looks to satiate itself through Gut's rage。 The impression I got from the Conviction arc was definitely not as positive as the Golden Age for sure, but the philosophizing, creepy egg man, the religious fanaticism, childhoods lost, and Guts' continuous journey still made it a fun read。 。。。more

The Lost Children arc feels a bit underwhelming in a few areas compared to the shocking finale of the Golden Age arc, but the ending of this arc finishes with quite a few shockers of its own to bring back the hype and despair of the series。 This arc is one of my favorites for a few reasons。 It shows that apostles can be victims in their own right, Rosine only chose to sacrifice her parents to become an apostle so that she could escape the relentless abuse she experienced from her father every si The Lost Children arc feels a bit underwhelming in a few areas compared to the shocking finale of the Golden Age arc, but the ending of this arc finishes with quite a few shockers of its own to bring back the hype and despair of the series。 This arc is one of my favorites for a few reasons。 It shows that apostles can be victims in their own right, Rosine only chose to sacrifice her parents to become an apostle so that she could escape the relentless abuse she experienced from her father every single day。 This is made further relatable by contrasting her situation with that of Jill's as she's also severely abused by her father and wants nothing more than to escape from that life。It also shows that Guts still has a human side。 Despite how broken and full of hate and bloodlust he is, he still cares for Jill and throws himself in harm's way multiple times to protect her。 Considering how tragic and terrifying Guts's childhood was, it's not too surprising that he would have a soft spot for kids that also happen to be suffering from abuse。And after the arc is done, we're thrown into another great arc which introduces us to the Holy Iron Chain Knights。 Farnese and Serpico are fascinating characters, Azan is a cool guy and the shadiness of the group as a whole raises a lot of red flags。 Guts and Puck also become much closer during this time which solidifies their companionship。 A very good volume with many conclusions and new beginnings。 。。。more

The arc is still picking up。 I always think of it as the middle book in a trilogy。 This is the relative calm before another intense story, and trust me it’s coming。 The volume does bring up the point that Guts will go to many extents to kill the demons he's hunting。 He'll use humans as bait, he'll sacrifice his right arm to a debilitating strike in order to use the opening to swing his sword with his other hand。 He'll kill anyone to get to the demons themselves。 It's not addressed totally in the The arc is still picking up。 I always think of it as the middle book in a trilogy。 This is the relative calm before another intense story, and trust me it’s coming。 The volume does bring up the point that Guts will go to many extents to kill the demons he's hunting。 He'll use humans as bait, he'll sacrifice his right arm to a debilitating strike in order to use the opening to swing his sword with his other hand。 He'll kill anyone to get to the demons themselves。 It's not addressed totally in the volume but it is prevalent。 It reminds the reader that Guts is not perfect。 Is his approach the right way? What is the right way? What is acceptable in the face of a world with demons in them。 If the children have been turned into monsters and are killing other humans, do you kill the children? If not, how do you stop it? These are all issues I saw come up in the volume。 I do believe there is some philosophy to be found in parts of this series。 The volume also brings up some of Gut's inner demons。 The volume ends on a nice cliffhanger so have the next volume handy。 。。。more

Really missing the Guts-Casca-Griffith character drama that drove the golden age arc。 Pluck is great, the kids were boring and I never really got invested in this storyline。 Hope it picks up in the next leg of the conviction arc。
